Pat's
House
- 3720 Mahrt St SE
- Salem, Oregon
-
- I designed and built this house in Salem, Oregon, after the house I was
living in burned down. I had the house framed and sided when I met Jeff.
Together we slowly finished building the house, with Jeff adding many
ideas, such as the suspended kitchen ceiling. The house has two halves:
a “kid side” with linoleum floors, kitchen and bathroom access;
and an “adult side” with carpet and fireplace.
Although the two “living rooms” are small, the high ceilings make
them seem much larger.
-
- Many design features were to keep costs low.
The exterior dimensions are 32’ X 32’.
The plumbing is all in a straight line.
The windows just under the peak on each side were found at a salvage
yard.
-
- The south roof is 45 degrees, designed for solar panels (although I never
installed any.) The Heatilator
fireplace has vents to both large rooms. Bedroom windows on the north side are 5’ off the floor to
reduce noise from the street. One-foot
wide vertical windows on the west side help light the hallway.
-
- Ceilings over bedrooms, bath, laundry room and hallway are 8 feet high.
The rest of the overhead space is open, except for an egg crate
fluorescent ceiling over the kitchen suspended from tie-in beams running
north/south.
