- This is an old recipe from my mother. These biscuits are a meal by
themselves.
-
- 4 cups flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 cup currants (or raisins)
- 1 tsp. baking soda in
- buttermilk (about 1 cup)
-
- Mix first 3 ingredients, then add sugar.
Cut in shortening. Add currants. Mix
soda in 1/2 cup buttermilk until dissolved then add to dry mix.
Keep adding buttermilk until a soft dough forms.
Pat dough out on a floured surface and cut biscuits with a
floured glass or biscuit cutter.
-
- Bake on cookie sheet at 400° until just beginning to turn gold at
the edges.
