CURRANT BISCUITS
This is an old recipe from my mother. These biscuits are a meal by themselves.

4 cups flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. salt
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup shortening
1 cup currants (or raisins)
1 tsp. baking soda in
buttermilk (about 1 cup)

Mix first 3 ingredients, then add sugar.  Cut in shortening.  Add currants.  Mix soda in 1/2 cup buttermilk until dissolved then add to dry mix.  Keep adding buttermilk until a soft dough forms.  Pat dough out on a floured surface and cut biscuits with a floured glass or biscuit cutter.

Bake on cookie sheet at 400° until just beginning to turn gold at the edges.
